In 2016, GovTech was formed with a simple goal: to use technology to make daily life easier and better for everyone, in support of Singapore’s journey towards becoming a Smart Nation.
As GovTech marks its 10th anniversary, we reflect on how far we have come – from transforming how citizens use public services, to creating opportunities even in challenging times and bringing communities closer through constant digital improvements. As we look back on our journey and ahead to what’s next, our mission remains the same: to engineer tomorrow’s digital government and use technology to make lives better.

You may already come across some of our solutions in your daily life:
Secure and convenient government digital transactions with apps like Singpass and LifeSG.
Easy access to government payouts, social services, grants, and resources.
Emergency support for vulnerable seniors through Personal Alert Buttons (PAB) and Smart City Tech.
Faster, smoother experiences when accessing public services from government agencies.
Through these initiatives, we are building a government that is “Digital to the Core and Serves with Heart.”
Stories of GovTech Documentary Series
This documentary series highlights the human impact of GovTech by following citizens whose lives are transformed by our products and digital services. Through emotive storytelling, it shows how our tech may not always be seen, but is constantly working to make lives better.
Ep 1: My Life Inside Singapore Boys' Home
Meet Elan (not his real name), a youth in the Singapore Boys’ Home, and his youth guidance officer Rayner as the pair share their journey of friendship and mutual trust. With the Home Central Information System, jointly developed by GovTech and Ministry of Social and Family Development, precious time spent on administrative tasks can now be used on higher value work like direct frontline rehabilitation.

10 years of co-creating with citizens
Citizens have always been at the heart of our work. Since 2016, everyday people have played an active role in shaping the Government’s digital products and services through our Citizens in Tech community.
Today, our 6,000-strong community contributes through focus group discussions, user testing sessions, surveys and other engagements to help ensure that digital services are practical, accessible and grounded in real needs. Their insights have helped improve everyday platforms such as SupportGoWhere and HealthHub, making them more seamless and user-friendly for citizens and businesses alike.

Building digital services for everyone
At GovTech, we believe that tech should be for everyone. That includes empowering vulnerable communities through tech, designing inclusive interfaces and products, and creating an inclusive and diverse tech community within GovTech and beyond.

Oobee
Oobee, is an open-source, customisable, and automated web accessibility testing tool that allows software development teams to find accessibility issues speedily.
The tool runs a crawler that scans and analyses web pages for issues such as an improper labeling of images or buttons. After a scan, the crawler assesses the impact rating of the accessibility issues to help software development teams decide on the next steps. To date, Oobee has scanned over 500,000 pages and identified over 7.5 million accessibility issues.
Digital Service Standards
The Digital Service Standards (DSS) helps government agencies implement digital services that meet the Digital Government Blueprint’s (DGB) goal of delivering digital services that are easy, seamless, and relevant for our citizens and businesses.
It consists of policies, standards, and guidelines for government agencies to adhere to and fulfils a core need of Singapore’s Digital Government Journey — to design and deliver unified and consistent government digital services to citizens and businesses based on their user needs.
Singapore Government Design System
The Singapore Government Design System (SGDS) ensures that all government services are united by a common UI language and user experience that is compliant to the DSS where applicable. It is made up of UI components, patterns and templates that are oriented towards citizen and business needs.
By following curated design guidelines to maximise user experiences, government agencies that utilise the SGDS can transform their websites and deliver high-quality digital services easily.
