WebAssist: Enabling the development of more inclusive government digital services
Open-source automated testing tool that scans and analyses websites to identify code-level accessibility issues.
Pinpoints specific lines of codes with accessibility issues and provides suggested fixes.
Aims to improve accessibility of websites for people with disabilities (PWD).
At GovTech, we champion the need to increase digital inclusion. A huge part of that begins with helping our fellow developers ensure that their websites and digital products meet accessibility standards and thus can be used easily by persons with disabilities (PWD).
This sparked the creation of WebAssist (formerly known as Oobee), an open-source, customisable, and automated web accessibility testing tool that allows software development teams to find accessibility issues speedily.
The tool runs a crawler that scans and analyses web pages for issues such as an improper labeling of images or buttons. After a scan, the crawler assesses the impact rating of the accessibility issues to help software development teams decide on the next steps.
Why use WebAssist?
The tool allows developers to improve the accessibility of their websites, as well as streamline web management. Here's how:
Receive reviews on accessibility
WebAssist provides a detailed assessment of the accessibility status at the code level.
Save time on scans and code testing
WebAssist can quickly identify code-level accessibility issues present in websites.
Enjoy more convenience
The user-friendly desktop application caters to a wide range of users who wish to perform scans easily. For software development teams, WebAssist can also run on the development environment and be integrated in the Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipeline.
